Any Wizards or Witches out there?

Thursday, July 19th, 2007

I know that I’m not the only Harry Potter fan on Nelson Avenue who is eagerly anticipating this Friday’s release of the final novel. You are too, right?

I was planning on heading to Barnes & Noble in Potomac Yard for their release party but Rebecca forward this to me which might be more fun:

“Deathly Hallows Eve Celebration” http://potterpartyoldtown.wordpress.com/tag/event-updates/

From the top of the page:
“Calling all Muggles to King Street in Alexandria for Deathly Hallows Eve!

Before you lock yourself inside to devour the pages of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, come out and party at this street-wide festival filled with Magical Creatures, Divination, Herbology Classes, A Yule Ball and numerous other exciting activities.Merchants up and down King Street in Old Town, Alexandria, Virginia will transform themselves into Potterized businesses: a sweetshop, a care of magical creatures shop, Gringott’s Bank, and more for a night of fun that truly can not be contained in just one venue. There will be live entertainment, costume contests, and much fanfare as the entire town counts down to the release of the final installment of this magical series.”

So put on your wizard robe, apply that fake lightning bolt tatoo and don’t forget your wand and head on down to King Street for a devilishly good time!

Ladder to Borrow

Tuesday, July 17th, 2007

I wanted to see if anyone had a ladder I might be able to borrow. Need to do some work on the windows of the second floor. I am guessing a 20 ft would probably do the job. If you do, please let me know. Thanks!! tim.donnelly1@gmail.com

CVS Late Night Noise – Vacuum Truck

Sunday, July 1st, 2007

Hi Nelson Ave Gang:

For the past year or so, neighbors have been contending with CVS and their mid-night vacuum cleaning truck. There is a vacuum truck that cleans the CVS/Giant parking lot late at night. It is a very loud truck that makes a lot of noise beyond the late night deadline for commercial activity (noise associated with deliveries, garbage pickup, cleaning, etc…)

I have spoken with CVS manager, Rudi about this. After I speak with her, it seems to stop and they clean the lot in the morning when there are no cars around — after about a week or so, they are back to cleaning at midnight/1:00 a.m.. She insists that she has instructed the cleaning company not to clean in the late hours. She claims an on-duty CVS manager must sign for the work as it is done and no one in her store apparently signed last week — though that night when I went over at 1:00 a.m., her night manager was aware of the truck.

Another neighbor I spoke with went over and spoke to the truck driver directly one night, and he claimed that CVS directed him to clean at night.

So, someone is not telling the truth here, but I have engaged Code Enforcement (Pat Walker) and the police liaison to DRCA (Capt Scott Ogden) (cc’ing DRCA pres Larry Altenberg) and exec committee).

Capt Ogden advises to call the police non-emergency 703-836-4444 and file a report and ask the police to respond and also notify the nuisance abatement number 703-836-0041 or Code Enforcement 703-836-4360 during the day to have them notify Pat Walker.

Has anyone else noted this problem?

I can appreciate CVS keeping their lot clean, and they have to do it when there are no cars around, but a loud vacuum truck cleaning the lot should work at a reasonable hour.

If this keeps up, perhaps we should ask DRCA to talk to the city about re-looking CVS’ 24/7 operating license.

Thanx
