My Favorite Resident

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008

This evening I was out watering a few of our new trees. There are three down at the end towards Gold Crust which I’ve not been able to get anyone to water on a regular basis and they’re not so happy so I’ve been doing what I can to water them. Hopefully they’ll make it through the summer and, if they make it, they should be OK next year.

But I digress… what I am writing about is to tell you all about my favorite resident of Nelson Avenue. He may be less than three feet tall but Benjamin has been busy this summer making octagonal pavers to decorate all the new trees around his house. I have been admiring them all summer as I have trundled the watering can up and down the street. Well, this evening Benjamin presented me with my very own paver to decorate the tree out in front of *my* house. Isn’t it cool?

Paver

Benjamin (and his father) tell me that they might make pavers for the rest of the new trees on the block. I think this is an awesome idea and will be a very welcome artistic addition to our little block. What do you think?

We’ve got (some) trees!

Wednesday, May 21st, 2008

It would be hard to miss all the new trees on our little block. Today the city planted about a dozen (I’m not sure of the exact number yet) trees on our block. This has been a long time coming – I’ve been working on this since February – but there is still more to come. The entire project involves removal of a bunch of stumps and about another dozen trees to be planted. Here’s hoping they do both soon. If you want to help speed up the process, call or email the city arborist – John Noelle at John.Noelle@alexandriava.gov or 703 838 4999.

Tree Survey Update

Friday, May 2nd, 2008

Just wanted to let you all know that we should be getting 21 to 23 new trees on the 500 block of Nelson Ave. soon!

I’ve completed the tree survey and worked with John Noelle, the city arborist to finalize the list. The next steps are for John to get the stumps removed and I am getting signatures from the lucky people who will be getting new trees. Once we have the stumps removed and signed forms, new trees will be planted by a contractor to the city (a contractor also will remove the stumps).

I am hoping that within a month or two this little project will be completed but you know how slow things can be when working with government…

Do you want to get involved? Let me know (EZ) by posting a comment.

Rain Barrel Seminar

Sunday, March 9th, 2008

Hi all,
EZ here again… This post is to let you know that I’ll be hosting a rain barrel seminar on Sunday, March 30 from 2-4pm in my backyard.

Some of you may have noticed the two large blue barrels in my backyard – those are my rain barrels. I’ve gotten a lot of interest in them since building the system and the response from the DRCA list serv email I sent out was amazing. So, I wanted to let you know, in case you are not on the DRCA list serv, when this seminar is. I’ll cover the theory, design, construction and maintenance of rain barrels and, of course, answer any questions people might have.

Send me an email, call me or just stop on by to let me know if you’ll be coming so I know how many people to expect.

Car Crash

Sunday, March 9th, 2008

You may have seen the knocked down sections of the fence which separates the Giant/CVS parking lot from the alley a few weeks back. Some of us actually got to see the nice, new Audi which knocked the fence down. I don’t know why she did it (if you know what happened, please tell us in the comments!) but I saw the older woman (in her 50’s) who did it – she must have been going pretty fast to have knocked the fence down and gotten her car so precariously perched, almost half-way into the alley. Peter is probably pretty happy she wasn’t going much faster – she would have smashed his SUV pretty good if she’d actually leaped the retaining wall.

One neighbor told me her husband was none too pleased when he arrived along with a tow-truck to remove the car (front wheels were well off the ground so she could not drive away). Sorry I did not take any pictures…. I will start doing this for things that happen to liven up this blog.

Through a neighbor (Paul) I have inquired as to the status of fence repairs – because, even though the broken fence has reduced my walk to Giant by about 30 feet, we all know that good fences make for good neighbors. Paul said that the management is well aware of the incident and, once the insurance is cleared up, they will repair the fence. Somehow I doubt there is much debate about who is at fault. Hmmm… inanimate fence or reckless driver? Hmmmm…..
